A new chapter in hospital construction has begun in the Cardio- and Cerebrovascular Specialty Building of a major healthcare project built by SCEGC No.11. The team has successfully installed 41 high-performance seismic isolation bearings across an entire floor—marking the first large-scale application of whole-floor seismic isolation technology in this type of project.
Seismic isolation bearings act like “shock absorbers” for buildings, protecting structures and occupants during earthquakes. But fitting an entire floor with these giant “seismic joints” is a task that demands extreme precision—and plenty of ingenuity.
Challenge 1: Threading a needle through a skeleton of steel
Above each isolator is a tightly packed, steel-reinforced concrete frame where rebars and shaped steel members interlock like bones in a skeleton. Every single rebar must pass exactly through the pre-drilled holes in the shaped steel—an effort akin to threading a needle in a dense forest of metal. One misplaced bar, and the whole installation sequence grinds to a halt.
Challenge 2: Millimetre-level perfection with massive steel components
Each isolator and its connection plates weigh a great deal, yet their final placement must be accurate to the millimetre. In this work, “close enough” simply doesn’t exist.
Once complete, the building—covering a total gross floor area of about 40,900 m²—will add 300 beds and greatly improve access to advanced healthcare in the region. This breakthrough not only sets a benchmark for seismic safety but also showcases SCEGC No.11’s ability to merge cutting-edge engineering with life-saving infrastructure.
