On February 8, a major urban infrastructure upgrade officially opened at Zhangjiabao Intersection in northern Xi’an.
Delivered by SCEGC No.11 Group, the project features four sunken plazas and a north–south underground pedestrian corridor—transforming one of the city’s busiest intersections into a safer, more efficient, and people-centered urban space.

At its core is a three-dimensional pedestrian system connecting all four corners of the intersection. Pedestrians can now cross Weiyang Road and Fengcheng 8th Road directly via underground passages, eliminating long detours and achieving true separation of people and vehicles, while keeping surface traffic flowing smoothly.
More than a mobility solution, the project integrates urban design, public space, and future commercial potential.

Inspired by the cultural theme “Flowers in Four Seasons, Everlasting Chang’an”, the sunken plazas offer functional yet welcoming public spaces. The northern underground corridor combines municipal access with reserved commercial areas, laying the foundation for long-term activation and urban value creation.

Completed within a 200-day construction period, the project demanded precise coordination under complex constraints, including uninterrupted metro operations and limited underground space. Through a design–build (EPC) delivery model and full-process BIM-based planning, the team successfully managed utility relocation, irregular structures, and high-precision finishes.

The Sunken Plaza stands as a compelling example of how integrated delivery and refined construction management can turn ambitious urban concepts into real, usable public infrastructure—offering a replicable model for dense cities worldwide.
